About Dr. Calderón-Abbo, M.D. FASAM. 
 

Dr. Calderón is board-certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, with an additional certification in mind-body medicine.  

A native of Mexico City, he graduated with honors from the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) followed by additional training in internal medicine and later, in psychiatry at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, MI.  

He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at LSUHSC where he directed the co-occurring disorders program and later, opened the prime integrated-psychiatry practice in New Orleans. He is clinical faculty at Tulane University and Senior faculty at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington D.C. where he conducts national and international trainings and supervision in mind-body medicine skills for healthcare providers, patients, and the Department of Defense. 

Dr. Calderon understands the holistic interdependence of people, families, communities, and their environment. This view informs his professional endeavors building greater functional integration and resilience.  

Seeking a larger public health footprint, in1998 Dr. Calderon became United Healthcare’s Chief Medical Officer for Behavioral Health in Louisiana and is a member of Optum’s National Medical Director’s team.  In this position, he helps design the behavioral health strategy for the health plan fulfilling Louisiana’s vision for health. He promotes integration of behavioral health with primary care, behavioral health expansion, quality of care, interventions to address the substance use epidemic, the impact of adverse childhood events, social and environmental determinants of health, and disaster preparedness and response.  As a consultant to United Health Group’s Chief Sustainability Office, he is a member of an elite team informing UHG’s mitigation, adaptation, and resilient response to climate change’s impact on UHC members, providers, communities, and the healthcare system. 

In 2007, Dr. Calderón became the Medical Director at Imagine Recovery, a holistic Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program, Partial Hospitalization, and Sober Living for individuals with co-occurring addictions and mental health. 

Dr. Calderón is a subject matter expert consultant to the state of Louisiana’s Department of Health’s committees overseeing mental health and addictions, and to healthcare systems on quality and risk mitigation, and is a frequent guest at local, national, and international news outlets. 

His current interests include integrated care for individuals with addictions and co-occurring conditions, and climate change’s impact on behavioral health. 
 
Dr. Calderón lives in New Orleans with his family. In his personal time, you’ll find him playing classic guitar, reading, hiking, or cycling.
